Use the OverlayQA Plugin for Figma
Last updated: November 7, 2026
The OverlayQA plugin runs inside Figma. It saves frames to your project for comparison in OverlayQA, captures any layer as an issue with its screenshot, colors and fonts, and compares a frame against a live site with AI on a 0-100 scale. Its two tabs are Issues and Design.
Install and Sign In
- Install the OverlayQA plugin from Figma Community.
- Run it in Figma and sign in with your OverlayQA account.
- Choose the project in the plugin's header. Everything you save goes to that project.
Save a Frame for Comparison
- Open the Design tab and select a frame on the canvas, or any layer inside it.
- Click Save design to project. OverlayQA keeps a dated copy of the frame.
- In the extension or Team Review, open Visual Comparison or AI Visual Comparison and choose it on the Saved design tab.
A saved copy does not change when the frame does. After you edit the frame, click Save latest design to save the newer version. Remove saved design removes the copy from the project and leaves your Figma file alone.
Save and Return From a Comparison
You can also start from a comparison that is waiting for a design:
- In the extension or Team Review, open the compare panel's Saved design tab and click Open Figma. Once the project has saved designs, the button reads Save a new design from Figma. The panel then shows Finish in Figma.
- In Figma, run the OverlayQA plugin. It shows Save for your comparison with the page the comparison is for.
- Save the frame. The plugin says your comparison is ready.
- Click Return to comparison. The comparison picks up the saved design and shows Ready to compare.
Closing the compare panel does not cancel the setup, and Cancel setup does. A setup lasts 30 minutes. People with view-only access cannot save a design.
Capture a Layer as an Issue
Select a layer on the canvas and the plugin captures it with its screenshot, colors and fonts. Each issue stays linked to its layer, so anyone can jump straight back to it. Capturing a layer has no AI step. The Issues tab lists what you captured.
Compare a Frame Against a Live Site
On the Design tab, choose Compare to your live site and enter a staging or production URL under Live URL. The plugin captures a screenshot, and AI compares the two with a 0-100 score and a list of differences.
Export Issues
From the plugin, issues export to Jira, Linear, Notion, or Asana. For the other trackers, open the same issue in the dashboard, the extension, or Team Review and export it from there.
Frequently Asked Questions
What if Figma is limiting requests?
Send the frame from the plugin and choose it under Saved design. The plugin exports the frame itself, so saving it does not wait on Figma's image requests.
Do I need the Chrome extension to use a saved design?
No. Saved designs appear in Visual Comparison and AI Visual Comparison in the extension and in Team Review, and Team Review needs no install for a public page.
Does the plugin offer my workspace tags?
No. Tags are set in the dashboard, the extension, or Team Review.
